The Mija Chronicles

Mexican food and culture, on both sides of the border

Woman of La Concha

October 18, 2010 by Lesley Tellez

Hey! Speaking of conchas, I have a post up about my concha obsession on The Eaten Path, an international-ish food blog that covers everything from barbecue to Thai food. Take a looksie if you’ve got a few minutes.

The photo above is of my most recent favorite concha, from El Popular in the Centro Histórico.

ay que rica! I want a bite of that concha. NOW! To be honest, I bite won’t do, I’d rather have the whole thing. It’s hard to find good conchas here in Houston, I remember when I first moved here–20ish years ago–my ex and I used to have breakfast at Ninfa’s on the weekends. That was my intro to fresh and GOOD Mexican pan dulce, sadly, I can hardly ever find it. I’m going to give your recipe a try.

chefyourself – Try El Bolillo bakery, but my opinion is that conchas must be eaten fresh so I don’t buy them unless a new batch has just come out. Skip the churros and all of their cookies and cakes. They shine with their conchas, any of their cream cheese filled pastries, teleras, and bolillos.

Hey chef — If you want I’ll email you the recipe I have. There’s also a concha recipe in Fany Gerson’s new cookbook “My Sweet Mexico,” which I am adoring lately. I haven’t tried the concha recipe but if I do, I’ll let you know how it compares.

Little lady, I’mma add you to my blog list! Just because we share a common love: conchas! I’ve always wanted to try my hand at making some, I believe I will now. Are you from Roma,Tx? That’s just down the road from us. Small world, LOL!

Hi Yaya: Glad to find another concha-lover out there! 🙂 If you make some, come back and post a picture, I’d love to see them. (Or email me the pic and I’ll post it myself.) And no, I live in Mexico City — Roma is a neighborhood there. I did used to live in Dallas though! And San Antonio for a few years.
