First impressions of Guadalajara — pretty women and cleanliness

December 1, 2009 by Lesley Tellez

In a cab on the way to the FIL yesterday, the cabbie asked where I was from. I said I lived in Mexico City, but I was originally from the United States.

“How’d you guess?” I asked him. “My accent?”

“No,” he said. “You’re too pretty. The women from Mexico City generally aren’t that pretty.”

Of course it was a line. I know plenty of beautiful women in Mexico City. But then I realized… wait, the women I’d seen on the street in Guadalajara really were attractive and stylish. In fact, if we were in Mexico City, I would have placed them as Condesa residents. But these Guadalajarans stretched across all barrios — from the Centro down to the Expo Center. This cabbie was right. Pretty, hip Jaliscienses seemed to be everywhere. Was it something in the water? Or the tortas ahogadas?

Guadalajara also seems very clean, probably because it’s so much smaller than Mexico City. I don’t see as much trash in the gutters or smell as many foul sewer-type smells. The guesthouse where I’m staying, Casa Vilasanta, is full of plants and spotless. Here’s the view from my window.

They’re known for their attractive people, like Gael and the like. Dark olive skin, green eyes….

I am, once again, jealous of your adventures. I just got back from Superama. Sigh.

I would have to agree with you on the Guadalajara Women. They must be the most beautiful beings I have seen. I found myself in Lago de Chapala and an area called Tonala I think. I spent about 9 days in the area and needless to say that my heart has never fluttered as much. I fell in love with the city and its inhabitants but its women will always be near my heart. Que mujeres tan preciosas y bellas!!

Your lodging’s website indicate that it’s a very good deal.

    Thanks for the lead!

I previously lived in Guadalajara and, yes, the eye candy is very abundant. I never developed a liking for tortas ahogadas, though – or ever understood why people there took such pride in a soggy sandwich smothered with chile sauce.

Um, D, people take pride because they’re GOOD! After a late night of drinking, nothing cures the cruda better like a beer and a spicy sandwich covered in chile sauce. And a big bowl of birria. But the sandwich first.

But the women from Mexico City are smarter what in the long term is better. 😀

Sorry but someone has to defend the “chilangas”

    I love/hate Mexico City.

GDL is full of beautiful women? We must have just had bad luck, then, since my husband was just complaining about the lack of eye candy (and, yes, he did complain about this to *me*. Ha!) Or maybe they’re not his type, which is why he ended up with a foreigner like me.

Went up to the book fair on Sunday. Loved it!

I’m from a susburb outside of Guadalajara, Zapotlanejo. I was raised here in Texas my whole life, when people from Mexico talk to me they always ask if I am from Guadalajara. I would be puzzled and say I was from Zapotlanejo but it it the same Jalisco. Well I would ask “Nearby why?” they respond ” you are really beautiful that’s why”. Personally I think all women are beautiful and it does not matter where one comes from.

Betty: Funny story. I agree with you, though, that what makes a woman beautiful is what’s on the inside. Thanks for sharing your story!

Ever heard of the term “ojos tapatios”? Refers to those BIG black eyes that Guadalajaran women are so known for….hotties, the lot of them!

I’m Mexican. And I think the most beautiful women in Mexico are the northern ones. The guadalajara are very horrible starting with you. Jajajaja one goes to guadalajara and takes tremendous disappointment to see pure fat woman, dwarf, ugly, not even the women of the high jalisco are as beautiful as they say, you have to exaggerate a lot. The northern women are and always will be the most beautiful in Mexico. No envy, okay? (i use translate. )
