The Mija Chronicles

Mexican food and culture, on both sides of the border

Meet my newest creation: my son, Tomás

April 22, 2015 by Lesley Tellez

For the past six to eight months I’ve been working on finishing my Mexico City cookbook, which is finally complete. (More on that shortly.) But the biggest news of all is… I had a baby!

Tomás was born two months ago.

So far motherhood has been challenging, exhausting and, at the beginning, terrifying — who was I to take care of this little being? Lately I’ve started to chill out a bit and realize that none of us actually know what we’re doing. The key for me has been to keep trying. And to soak up all the joy that hits me when he smiles.

Mija is now a mom.

Thank you Juan. We’re definitely teaching him to cook. He’s going to be Mom’s helper whether he likes it or not. 😀 (But who doesn’t love sticking their hands in tortilla or tamal masa?)

DC: I’m going to stick a wooden spoon in his hand as soon as he’s able to grasp and hold things. We’ll see what unfolds!

Adorable baby! Reminds me of my 9-month-old grandson whose smile melts my heart each time I see him. Congratulations!

    • Lesley Tellez

      April 22, 2015 at 3:18 pm

Thank you, Clemencia. Yes, his smile is melting my heart lately. I never thought I’d be the mom who burbled in baby talk, but I have become that person, just because I want him to smile at me!

Felicidades Mija, el es precioso!!!! You will be fine, and it is good to remember that none of us know/knew what we were doing with our new babies. Be gentle with yourself, and enjoy the heck out of him.

    Ciao!

    • Lesley Tellez

      April 22, 2015 at 3:19 pm

Thanks, Billie. “Cut yourself some slack” has become my daily mantra. I am trying to remember daily that these moments don’t last.

    Congratulations
I hope he enjoys food and cooking as much as you.
Our 4 year old grandson is already prepping with us – but doesn’t like the “burny” things we put in our meals.
Just confirmed our trip to Mexico in December/January for 4 weeks – and looking forward to the wonderful food – made more exciting by you

    • Lesley Tellez

      April 22, 2015 at 3:20 pm

Thank you, Mark! I hope the same things for my son. I actually talk about food a lot with him and he seems to enjoy it, or maybe he just likes the noise. He does love the pots hanging from our kitchen ceiling, so I’m considering that a good sign!

Wow what a beautiful little one – congrats!

I for one have been waiting for your cookbook. I really enjoy your blog!

Also/FYI – folks might be interested that I was finally able to obtain/import a Nixtamatic!

I’m happy to share contact, experience, and info for anyone who might want to get one for themselves. Or just post it here if you want me to. I know a number of people have been frustrated in trying to get one.

Best wishes for you and your beautiful new addition!

      April 22, 2015 at 3:23 pm

Hi Ray: Thank you! And yes, I’d love to hear how you got a Nixtamatic. Maybe you can comment on the original Nixtamatic post? Or you’re welcome to email me and let me know. I still get lots of emails from people asking how to do it. Eager to hear how you made it happen.

We miss you Lesley! So happy you have completed two very, very important projects! Both were time consuming and draining, but now you can sit back (sleep deprived yet happy) with the satisfaction that two of your dreams have come to fruition! FELICIDADES desde Mexico!

Mija: I can’t believe you have a mijo! He’s adorable. Congratulations!

I agree – motherhood IS challenging and exhausting. I always felt like I needed just 30 more minutes of sleep until Amado was about six months.

I can’t wait for your cookbook. I’ll be in NYC this August, so maybe I’ll be able to get your autograph!

Oh, and Amado said he can be Tomás’s mentor…he’ll even let him borrow his little wooden spoon (as seen in this picture –>http://lolascocina.com/2014/05/05/taste-trekkers-taste-of-oaxaca/).

    XO – Lola

Amado is adorable. Yes, we need to hook them up so they can eventually start preparing fabulous dishes for their mamas. 🙂 I am in the “just one more hour of sleep” mode. (Or even two more hours, as T has proven himself to be an unpredictable sleeper.) Relishing the good moments, but sometimes I think that six months can’t get here fast enough.

First of all he is just too handsome.
But yeah none of us knew what to do with these little people when we bring em home. But Mija guess. U dont need to know cause he will let u know what he needs, when and how he needs it. Every time he cries he’s saying hey Mom I need you. You and him will fall into yr own patterns. Early in the morning, and at night. Dont forget Lesley he’s been inside yoy for 9 months,he already knows yr body. He knows yr breathing,yr sleeping he knew to move over when u ate too much. Now,just get in tune with his body,he’s going to show Mom just what he needs.
    Good luck New Mommy
